Montalcino is the famous Tuscan town that produces the exquisite Brunello di Montalcino wines made from a specific clone of Sangiovese planted to premium sites. Sometimes thought of Brunello di Montalcino's younger sibling, Rosso di Montalcino is lighter and fruitier and an excellent every day wine for any occasion. By law, it must be aged for one year before release compared to four years for a Brunello. The Camigliano expresses the full bouquet of fruit and flowers that characterizes young Sangiovese wines. It's nicely balanced with vibrant blackberry fruit and notions of mushrooms.

Camigliano is an estate on the meteoric rise. Inhabited since the Etruscan period, the property was a lively center in the Middle Ages, and remains of the fired brick stones of that period can be found near the ancient walls of the castle, set on the top of a hill, surrounded by woodland and vineyards. When the Ghezi family acquired the winery and vineyards in 1957 they essentially bought the whole village. The property's ancient buildings date to the year 700 and the boundary walls were built around 1250. Over time the buildings have been restored and the winery modernized to the highest standards. Besides the typical wines of the area, Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino, the farm produces a special reserve Brunello selection called Gualto, and a splendid Cabernet Sauvignon Sant'Antimo called Campo ai Mori.
This classic Tuscan Sangiovese makes an easy and natural pairing to accompany pasta. My recipe for Cavatelli with Bolognese Sauce is almost too good. The secret is using both pork and veal (more flavor), and dried porcini mushrooms. Serve it with a green salad and good Italian country style bread. Perfetto!
When the Ghezi family bought the Camigliano estate, the villagers on the property were allowed to live in their houses for free.
